A practical guide to unit conversion

UnitTidy converts everyday measurements and data quantities directly in your browser. Start with the category, choose the original and destination units, then enter a value. The result and the equivalent-unit table update as you type. The Convert button also calculates on demand.

Four steps to a clear result

  1. Choose a category. Quantities such as energy and power are separate because converting between them requires additional information.
  2. Read the full unit label. US liquid and UK imperial gallons, bytes and bits, and SI and binary prefixes are intentionally distinct.
  3. Choose a decimal separator: 1.5 or 1,5. Grouping separators and mixed formats are rejected to avoid silent guessing. Scientific notation such as 1e3 is supported.
  4. Choose 6, 12, 20 or 30 significant digits. “Exact” means the displayed value equals the calculation from the specified definitions. “Rounded” means the displayed number is rounded; it is not a statement about measurement accuracy.

Batch conversion and downloads

Paste one number per line, up to 200 lines and 40,000 characters. The same units and temperature mode apply to every row. Invalid rows show their own errors instead of being silently discarded. Changing the units invalidates old batch results. CSV export uses a decimal point for interoperability and includes units, rounding and errors. Cells that could be interpreted as spreadsheet formulas are prefixed with an apostrophe.

Transfer time

Enter file size, link rate and the fraction of nominal speed available for file data. At 80% efficiency, a 1 GB file on a 100 Mbit/s link takes an estimated 100 seconds. The ideal estimate is 80 seconds. These are calculations, not measurements or guarantees.

Your input

Calculation values remain in this tab's memory. Closing or reloading the tab clears them. Only the language preference is saved locally. A CSV is created on your device only when you request it; nothing is uploaded to a calculation server.
